We visited Kenya in 2004 with Jim and Edna Leftwich and John and Hazel Prestwich, to see some of the work of the projects supported by Amani UK. We both felt that we would be back, but wanted to be more than 'mission tourists'. Hazel is a marker for SOON Bible courses and both she and John know Benard Muga, a young Christian man who leads several SOON groups in and around Oyugis. In discussion and prayer with John and Hazel we both felt we could be of most use holding a series of Bible studies for members of Benard’s groups.

In late October 2006 we again went to Kenya and, over six days, conducted a series of twelve Bible studies in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians while the Amani UK team went about their normal duties. It was a real joy to see God’s people coming together from different denominations to gather round His Word and to learn from Him.

On each day there were two sessions beginning with a time of praise and worship then about 45 minutes teaching followed by about 15 minutes for questions and discussion. After a much-needed break there was a further time of teaching, questions and discussion, and closing with praise and worship.

The opportunity was given for anyone with specific needs to come for prayer ministry, and during these times God worked wonderfully in the lives of many people. It was obvious from the questions and discussions too, that God was at work in the lives of all of those who were there.

It was a real privilege to be part of what God is doing in Kenya, and to see the thirst for the Word of God among His people there. As a result of generous gifts it was possible to provide bibles for the use of all who attended, both in English and Luo, the local language. At the end of the week, these Bibles were distributed between the SOON Groups for which Benard has oversight.

Zedekiah, Benard, and Judith

Tribute must be paid to Benard for the hard work he put in preparing for the visit, and also to Zedekiah Oketch, Benard’s fellow-worker in the preparations and organisation, and Judith Akoth, who led the singing in the times of worship and praise.
