Thanks to the generosity and support of ElectricAid and of The Anton Jurgens Charitable Trust, funds have been made available for two major projects at Kirongo.

The provision of a deep well to supply domestic quality water to the Kirongo Project, Nursery School, and surrounding community will be of the utmost importance to many people and is being funded by ElectricAid, the charity of the Electricity Supply Board of Ireland and their staff.

At the same time The Anton Jurgens Trust are funding the installation of a solar pump for the well together with accompanying electrification of the Kirongo Project site. Amongst other things this will enable the use of a computer rather than having to purchase office services in Oyugis, some 12 miles away. It will also give the opportunity for better teaching materials in the nursery school as well as lighting and power for the two little visitors houses. This will improve the possibility of visiting westerners actually staying at Kirongo rather than in Oyugis.

Originally scheduled for the end of August 2006, a normally dry period, the drilling project has now been postponed until January 2007. It is essential to drill at the end of a dry period, to ensure the water table level is at a low point, and therefore guarantee a water supply in all seasons. With real perversity the long rains continued longer than usual this year, but at least secured a good harvest! We are now looking to the end of the next long dry period, normally in January. We are not the only ones whose weather appears to be more variable!
