The Trustees of Amani UK regret to announce the sudden and tragic death of Peter Juma Manyala, the Manager of the Kirongo Project, in February 2006. Peter was the only member of the current staff from the days of the original Mavuno Project established by Elizabeth Feilden in 1986 and which subsequently became Amani Christian Community Development Project. From those early days Peter had spent the majority of the intervening 20 years working for the Kirongo Project. Since Amani UK disassociated itself from Amani CCDP in March 2003 Peter had been managing Kirongo as a completely separate project through its own Community Board with very limited financial support.
Largely due to Peter’s direction and enthusiasm, the Kirongo Nursery School has more than doubled in size and is now officially registered as a Primary Feeder School. In addition, with Peter’s encouragement, two further Nursery Schools were started and developed within the wider Kirongo community.
Peter was seen very much as an "elder statesman" across the three projects of Kirongo, JAM, and UCCIP who partner with Amani UK. He was a popular figure with adults and children alike, as can be seen by the accompanying photographs. The fact that the Kirongo Project is at the heart of the local community is largely to Peter’s credit. His presence and leadership will be greatly missed. Jim Leftwich |
