| Upendo Foundation International - Report on First Year of Activity |
As our first year closes, Upendo Foundation International has the following reflections to make. The organisation has come to terms with the effects of the post-election disturbances which de-stabilised most development operations early in the year. As policy managers, Board members of Upendo Foundation had the privilege of participating in an induction workshop whose theme was “Leading and Managing for Community Development”. This has led to improved policy management, even at project level.
There is good interaction between the Upendo Board and the three Projects (Umoja, Imani and Kirongo) with continuously developing relations with Project management and staff. The Upendo Board has made three important decisions with the recruitment of a programme officer in January 2008 then an accountant and finally an external auditor. The following instruments are now in place: Programme Manual; Finance Operation Manual; Functional community training programme implemented through the three Projects. The meetings between Amani UK trustees, firstly with the Upendo Board and then with all the staff in the Upendo federation of projects has resulted in increased awareness, improved working relations between partner projects, and enhanced and harmonized reporting and accounting systems being put in place. A particularly wonderful achievement is a result of the generous contributions from Amani UK friends through Buy a Gift for Kenya, which has left many group members shedding tears of joy as they receive gifts which positively empowers them. As true friends and partners, Amani UK has sent three different teams to the project partners of Upendo Foundation, not just visits but achieving much in coming i.e. Training on staff and team relationships, conducted by Pastor Derek and Darren; Reviewing vision, strategy and governance with Jim and Gordon Ross. Lastly, a spiritual team led by Pastor Derek and Darren, where many community group members received spiritual blessings from the visits. Upendo Foundation, through the 11 strong Board of men and women of high integrity, are committed to good governance and direction as we face the challenges of the future.
