The Trustees of Amani UK are:

  • Darren Bignell spent 3 months in Zimbabwe and Kenya after finishing university in the late 1990s. Like Emily, Darren was one of the young leaders on the first group visit by Holy Trinity in 2000. He has been back each year since then with successive teams. While Emily brings experience of charity work and trusts, Darren’s background is in writing and editing. Their skills in these areas, together with their natural affinity to Kenya, will be vital as we seek to develop the work of Amani UK on a broader front there.

  • Emily Smith was a member of Holy Trinity, Hazlemere until earlier this year when, as a newly married, her husband's work took the couple off to Kent. It was Emily who provided the first vital link between Amani and Holy Trinity, Hazlemere, in 2000. At that time, Holy Trinity were planning a visit to Zimbabwe for a group of their young people. As the situation in Zimbabwe deteriorated sharply, the decision was taken to cancel the trip. Fortunately, Emily, who was one of the leaders, had gone to university with Rachel (Elizabeth Feilden's grand-daughter), with whom she had helped establish the JAM holiday club a few years earlier. This, of course, had since grown into the widows and orphans project within the Amani Project. The visit was switched to Amani and laid the foundation for the strong Holy Trinity connection with Amani UK which exists today. Emily has returned to the project several times. Emily has worked in the voluntary sector for over 6 years and is now working as an advisor to community and voluntary groups in Kent.

  • Nick Walton is Secretary of Amani UK. An IT professional living in Cheshire responsible for the Amani UK newsletter, the Amani UK website, and the Upendo Foundation International website. Visited Amani in Kenya in 1998.
